Catarina is 20 years old and the middle of five siblings.  In a very machismo society, Mercedes breaks every mold imposed on her as a young woman.  She participated in all of the sports at her high school, climbs the volcanoes in her area, and is a leader in her church.   Mercedes graduated from high school in 2007 and is now studying Pedagogy at the University Mariano Galvez in Mazatenango.
