Fresh perspectives on human rights, the impact of globalization, Latin American ecotourism and development initiatives focused on education and technology are available at Roots & Wings International’s blog
Spokane, WA, October 05, 2011 – With more than half of its people living below the poverty line, Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. In its rural, indigenous areas, the average family struggles to eke out a living from coffee farming, living on less than $2 per day. For those who care about the survival and economic development of Guatemala’s colorful Mayan cultures, the Roots & Wings International blog offers an absorbing, enlightening window on the challenges, opportunities and milieu involved (http://www.rootsandwingsintl.org/blog/ ).
RWI created the blog to share helpful information on topics ranging from ecotourism and hiking in rural Guatemala to the role of education and technology in promoting economic development.
Bloggers who have lived in, studied in or worked in Guatemala provide vivid vignettes about contemporary life in the country. Topics range from human rights-related issues and treks in the Guatemalan highlands to projects that help bridge the poverty gap or bring modern technology to cultures that need new words to describe 21st century gadgets.
“The blog gets repeat visits from Guatemalan expatriates, advocates of human rights or fair trade who focus on Latin America, journalists who use our blogs and background information as a reporting resource, travelers who seek adventures off the beaten path and members of the general public who are interested in Guatemalan history and culture,” says Vanina Sloan, Public Relations Manager at Roots & Wings International.
Based in Spokane, Washington, Roots & Wings International (RWI) (http://www.rootsandwingsintl.org) is a non-profit focused on promoting economic development in rural Guatemala by providing educational opportunities and access to technology. About Roots & Wings International (RWI)
RWI was created in 2004 by Erik Swanson, a business attorney at Immix Law Group PC, then the director of a high school in rural Guatemala. The mission was to improve the lives of Guatemala's indigenous population through education, training and technology. RWI has several donation programs including monthly contributions, making a one-time donation, naming a scholarship, corporate gift matching, buying Guatemalan-made coffee, shopping at Amazon for the cause, volunteering with skills and time and starting a fundraiser. Thanks to the support of individuals and corporate sponsors, RWI has been able to develop three different programs – University Scholarships, Computer Literacy and After-School Tutoring – to help the students from rural Guatemala work towards the development of their native communities.
