Breaking Ground
on Tech Center
Is Underway!

Breaking ground has just begun on our new technology center in the Boca Costa region of Guatemala. Erik Swanson, RWI president and founder said, “It’s exciting to see things have finally begun!”

You can view photos of the first stages of the construction project by clicking on Tech Center photos!

Just this past February, RWI was awarded the $100K funding by TECO Energy. Already, we’re seeing progress being made!

RWI Spanish Website Launched!

On April 28th, RWI’s Spanish-language website was launched. The new website caters to our growing Spanish-speaking audiences and will feature a Spanish-language blog.

The Spanish-language website is important to allow our Spanish-speaking audiences to take part in RWI initiatives right as we bring them to our English-speaking audience.

We also hope that with the launch of this new site, we will reach out to companies who communicate primarily in Spanish and who may have an interest in supporting an organization like RWI, whose goals so closely match their own.

We want to thank our talented team of RWI volunteers who have put in hours of time and lent their invaluable skills to help make our dream of a Spanish website a reality. Thank you Agus, Ed, Edwin and Nithin!

Featured Volunteer:
Shweta Munshi

Shweta is our marketing guru. She has lent numerous hours in helping RWI expand its 50 Great Reasons Campaign. She has tirelessly provided marketing materials, including taking the lead on our 50 Great Reasons Campaign landing page and organizing Erik Swanson’s YouTube video interview (to be available soon). With Shweta’s invaluable input, RWI is moving quickly in funding the 50 scholarships for our 50 Great Reasons Campaign!

In her spare time, Shweta’s interests revolve around public speaking and writing. She is a “member of Toastmasters Club, Scranton that provides a platform for enhancing public speaking skills and a lot more,” she said. Shweta also writes a personal blog!

Impact of Funds

RWI partner Jolkona has provided an impact summary. This information will be useful to donors, especially:

  • Computer Literacy Training: To date, the Jolkona Community has provided 271 months of Computer Literacy Training to 48 indigenous Guatemalan youth.
  • After School Tutoring: To date, the Jolkona Community has provided 59 months of After School Tutoring to 21 indigenous elementary students in Guatemala.

Donations are being put to good use, and we hope to collect more funding to further benefit our Guatemalan scholars!

Say What? “Fijese Que!”

If you were to vacation in Guatemala, a phrase you might hear quite often is “fijese que!” “Fijese que” commingles with everyday speech and even serves as a prelude to common social interactions. Mary, who volunteers in Guatemala and writes for RWI, has blogged about this famous phrase: “I had to learn to become accustomed to the fact that things will not always happen when you want them to, nor will they happen when people tell you they will happen.  And that is where fíjese que comes in…. Learning the language is not always about the words themselves.  You learn a language truly when you learn the culture.  And ““fíjese que” is definitely more than just a phrase.  It is part of life.”
