Roots & Wings International

Goodsearch donates with every search

We have something new and exciting we'd like to share with you! It's the new Roots and Wings International toolbar from GoodSearch.com — once added to IE or Firefox, each time you shop at more than 1,300 stores (from Amazon to Zazzle!) a percentage of your purchase will automatically be donated to Roots and Wings International — at no cost to you (and you may even save money as the toolbar provides coupons and deals as well!). The toolbar also has a search box and each time you search the Internet, about a penny is donated to Roots and Wings International. Goodsearch!

RWI has raised over $30 through GoodSearch.com toolbar in just under two months! Spread the word! Every penny makes a difference! With the money RWI has raised so far, six Guatemalan children can be tutored for one month each, making GoodSearch.com a great tool to support a cause!

RWI's Scholarship Interviews in Progress

2007 scholarship recipients RWI is the midst of interviewing applicants for the 2010 school year, which begins in January. We look for individuals who demonstrate academic promise, financial need and a dedication to their community. Community involvement is an important factor in selecting our recipients because these scholars will become the bridge to economic development in the rural villages we serve. We hope that the bonds these youth have already formed with their community will keep them committed to using their education to help promote their community's development.

We also place a premium on technical fields because such skills are severely lacking in the area in which RWI works. Applicants with interests in civil engineering, medicine, law, etc., are given priority in the applicant pool. In contrast, social work and teaching have oversaturated the region, and RWI will not accept applicants for such areas of study.

Applicants will be notified of their acceptance or rejection by the end of November. If you would like to be a part of our scholars education, you can help by donating $5 now!

Volunteer Appreciation: Edwin, our webmaster

Edwin picture Each month, RWI sends subscribers informative newsletters that impart the organization's latest news. The advanced layout and unique graphics are the fine nuances constructed by RWI's very own talented and resourceful webmaster Edwin Lunandy—also this month's featured volunteer!

Edwin had shown his finesse in his area of expertise via Smashing Magazine's design contest. His design was featured in Free Typographic XHTML/CSS-Layouts For Your Designs article. Technology Center Update
RWI President Erik Swanson provides us with an update on the proposed technology center, which will be the first technology center in the Boca Costa region. Swanson says, “One of our corporate partners, TECO Energy, has already purchased the land for us and hired an architect to draw up the building plans”. RWI is now looking for partners to help us raise the $75,000 needed to create this state of the art technology center in the mountains of rural Guatemala. Progress continues to be made. RWI is steps away from laying the first brick of the new technology center building.
Contact us at 202-747-4946 if your company would like more sponsorship information for this project.

The Cameras Do Not Lie - Peek into the Lives of Rural Guatemalans
RWI's original YouTube videos are captivating and educational. Each brief video spotlights life in the coffee-growing regions of Guatemala and RWI's role there. Rachel Cope, RWI's very own board member, shot the footage for these videos during her visits to Guatemala. Our volunteer video editor Victor Marcos worked tirelessly and ingeniously to put together an intriguing depiction of RWI's work in Guatemala's neediest regions and the vigorous people who joyfully live there despite impoverished circumstances. “Programs for Indigenous” Watch! provides a crash course in RWI's noble mission. Please consider helping us facilitate our educational programs in the Guatemalan community we serve by donating now!
