Roots and Wings International (RWI) has a talented pool of dedicated volunteers who contribute much time and effort into making RWI the success that it is. Our Director of Marketing has been with RWI since 2008. Here is her take on volunteering for RWI:
Why I volunteer
“I volunteer remotely with Roots and Wings International (RWI). It’s a nonprofit that helps impoverished youth in rural Guatemala. By giving these indigenous children a chance to finish elementary school and providing university scholarships to those with demonstrated leadership qualities, RWI is transforming lives through education.
“I came to know RWI through VolunteerMatch.org. At that time, I was volunteering remotely and on-site with two nonprofits. None gave me the opportunity to fully utilize my experience and skills, and I was wanting to make a greater impact.
“All of RWI’s university scholars are the first in their family to study beyond elementary school. I could relate to the joy and pride of these scholars’ illiterate parents. I was the first in my family to go to university, setting the path for three younger siblings. My parents were illiterate. My mother had one year of education and my father had two. Both realized the value of education and worked hard to make sure we needn’t work as hard as them for a living. In Singapore, where I was born, raised and educated, breaking out of the norm wasn’t as difficult as in Guatemala. We have a good education system in place where as long as you can study, you can always get financial aid.”
